Waccamaw Dermatology, one of the largest physician-owned dermatology practices in the Carolinas, has opened its twelfth location in Wilmington, N.C., reinforcing its commitment to providing accessible, top-tier dermatological care. Situated at The Offices at Iron Gate, the new office isn’t just an expansion—it's a promise to deliver essential services like skin cancer screenings and expert dermatological treatment to the local community.
Led by Managing Partner Dr. Brandon J. Coakley, a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, the Wilmington office is equipped to offer fast, precise care for skin cancer detection and a wide range of skin conditions. Certified Nurse Practitioner Jill Maddox, NP-C, with over a decade of experience, rounds out the expert team, ensuring every patient receives personalized, high-quality care. We caught up with NP Maddox to learn more about the new location and its impact on the community.
Tell us about your background and your interest in dermatology.
I began my nursing career as a staff nurse on a cardiac stepdown unit in Indiana and later in a Level II Trauma Center ICU during graduate school. I completed my Doctorate in Nursing Practice and am a Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner with 15 years of experience in dermatology. Human skin can be complex, and I became fascinated by the many skin disorders that manifest from internal diseases. I love all aspects of dermatology diagnoses, including skin cancer, rashes, and severe acne, and will work diligently until I find the answers my patients need. Each patient deserves to have the best possible quality of life, and I am dedicated to maintaining their trust. I am thrilled to bring my many years of dermatology expertise to my new community.
What makes Waccamaw Dermatology unique and stand out as a practice?
Waccamaw is home to some of the most dedicated and talented dermatologists I've met. We offer the same award-winning care in Wilmington that we do in our other offices, which has been recognized for [specific awards or achievements]. Providers and staff genuinely care about their patients. Senior leadership is willing to use all the highly trained and competent talent at the table. Waccamaw ensures that all patients have the ideal service provider to meet their needs, and every staff member chooses to interact with our patients as if they were family members.
Wilmington, NC, has a sun-loving population that spends much time outdoors and at the beach. What advice would you give readers regarding skin sun exposure?
We at Waccamaw are realistic, and we want people to enjoy the lives they have chosen. We ask them to prioritise sunscreen (reapplying every 2 hours when out in the sun is key), wear a hat with a brim, and seek shade when they can. Sun-protective clothing is also an option many of our patients appreciate. And don't forget a skin cancer screening.
What skin cancer treatments will be offered at Waccamaw Dermatology?
At Waccamaw Dermatology, we pride ourselves on considering the entire range of therapies for skin cancer. Our goal is to use the least invasive therapy possible, and depending on the specific cancer, we treat our patients with topical creams, standard surgery, Mohs surgery, and even cutting-edge image-guided radiation therapy. While we offer many therapies within Waccamaw Dermatology, we also collaborate with colleagues in other specialities to ensure the highest quality care possible.
