At Evoke Mind + Body, therapy is more than a conversation—it’s a collaborative, whole-person approach to healing that meets you exactly where you are. With locations in Wilmington and Leland, the practice was founded on a simple but powerful idea: that mental health care should be accessible, personalized, and deeply human.

What began as one therapist’s vision to fill a gap in the community has grown into a supportive space where individuals can navigate life’s challenges with guidance, compassion, and care. From managing anxiety and grief to working through major life transitions, the team at Evoke is committed to creating an environment where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered. In this Q&A with Therapist & Director of Marketing, Olivia Short McCord, , we explore how Evoke Mind + Body is redefining therapy—offering not just support, but a pathway toward meaningful growth, connection, and lasting wellbeing.
What inspired the founding of Evoke Mind + Body, and what need did you see in the Wilmington community when you first started?
The founding of Evoke Mind and Body came about through a mix of serendipity and
intention. Owner and therapist, Mindy Carlson, recognized a gap in both mental health services and yoga studios in the Monkey Junction area of Wilmington after working with clients across the city. After some prayer and a drive around town, her vision began to take shape when she discovered the space that would ultimately become the Wilmington office. It became an opportunity to create a place where she could offer integrative, whole-person care, while also fostering a supportive environment for the professionals who work there. As the practice grew, Mindy identified another underserved community across the bridge in Leland. Many residents there faced similar challenges in accessing convenient mental health care and a welcoming yoga studio, where there could be a mind and body focus. To help meet that need, the team expanded and opened Evoke Mind and Body - Leland, bringing the same community-centered approach to that area. Together, both locations reflect Evoke’s core mission: to provide a safe, welcoming space where healing and whole-person wellness are the priority.
Evoke Mind + Body takes a holistic approach to mental and emotional wellbeing. How do your therapists tailor care to meet the individual needs of each client?
Our therapists take a personalized approach to care by recognizing that every client’s
experiences, goals, and challenges are unique. The team works to tailor therapy to each
individual’s personal journey. Each therapist brings their own specialties, therapeutic
approaches, and personality into the work they do. This diversity within the team allows clients to be matched with a therapist whose style and expertise best fit their needs. Some therapists may focus on certain life stages, specific mental health concerns, or particular evidence-based approaches, helping ensure that clients receive care that aligns with what they are experiencing. At the same time, all therapists at Evoke share a common mission which is to meet the client where they are at. By taking time to understand a client and what makes them the person they are, therapists can adapt their approach and collaborate with clients to create a path forward
that supports their mental, emotional, and overall wellbeing.
What are some of the most common challenges or life transitions that bring people through your doors in Wilmington?
In our offices, people seek support for a wide range of experiences, but several common
challenges tend to bring individuals through the doors. Many clients come in looking for help managing stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief, which are some of the most frequent concerns addressed in therapy. In addition to these concerns, many individuals are navigating major life transitions, such as changes in relationships, career shifts, becoming a parent, relocating, or adjusting to new stages of life. These transitions can often bring uncertainty or emotional strain, and therapy provides a space to process those changes and build healthy coping strategies. Clients also often seek support for interpersonal difficulties, including challenges with communication, boundaries, family dynamics, or relationship conflicts. Therapy can help individuals better understand themselves and develop stronger, healthier connections
with others. While these are some of the most common concerns, the reality is that the range of needs is much broader.
Creating a safe and supportive environment is essential in therapy. How does Evoke cultivate a space where clients feel comfortable opening up and doing the work of healing?
Creating a safe and supportive environment is central to the therapeutic process.
Therapists strive to meet clients as people first, fostering an atmosphere that feels welcoming rather than intimidating. Clients will find that our therapists are comfortable with their own humanness, allowing personality and authentic connection to emerge. By approaching sessions with empathy and curiosity, they help clients feel seen, heard, and respected as they share their experiences. A key part of this approach is acknowledging that clients are the experts on their own lives. Instead of positioning themselves as authorities with all the answers, therapists collaborate with clients, supporting them as they explore their thoughts, feelings, and goals. This perspective helps build trust and empowers individuals to take an active role in their healing process. The team also openly recognizes the courage it takes to begin therapy. Clients are commended for showing up, being vulnerable, and doing the work of healing, which helps reinforce a supportive environment where growth and self-discovery can happen at a comfortable pace.
For someone considering therapy for the first time, what advice would you offer to help them take that first step toward seeking support?
For someone considering therapy for the first time, the most important advice is simple:
take the leap, even if it feels a little scary. Reaching out for support can feel intimidating,
especially if you’re unsure what to expect. At Evoke Mind and Body, you don’t have to have everything figured out before making that first call. Even if you’re unsure which therapist best fits your needs, the team is there to help guide you through the process and connect you with someone who feels like the right match. Therapy offers a space where you deserve to feel listened to, understood, challenged, and supported. Taking that first step can open the door to meaningful growth, healing, and greater self-understanding. Most importantly, you don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. While we cannot control if it rains, our therapists are ready to walk alongside you through the storm and celebrate with you when the sun shines again.
