REVOLUTIONIZING RECOVERY: Andrea Reed Brings Science-Backed Wellness to Wilmington with Di+Thurma

At Di+Thurma Wilmington, wellness begins with a deeply personal mission. Founded by Andrea Reed, a hospital pharmacist who has spent decades witnessing the long-term consequences of chronic illness, the concept grew from a desire to shift the conversation from treating disease to preventing it. Through her own journey managing autoimmune disease, improving fitness, and prioritizing recovery, Andrea discovered the transformative benefits of therapies like sauna, cold plunge, and red light therapy. What began as a personal pursuit of better health soon evolved into a vision: to create a welcoming wellness space where the Wilmington community could access science-backed recovery tools, support one another, and build sustainable habits that improve resilience, energy, and long-term well-being.

Tell us about your background and what inspired Di+Thurma Wilmington.
As a pharmacist working in a hospital setting, I’ve spent decades seeing the consequences of poor health decisions—many of which aren’t intentional. Often it’s a lack of understanding about how stress affects the body, limited access to healthy food, fitness, or recovery tools, or the cumulative effects of environmental toxins. Over time, these daily factors can lead to chronic disease and a wide range of symptoms.
During my own health journey—improving fitness, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing my autoimmune disease—I realized there was limited access locally to therapies like saunas, cold plunges, and red light therapy. I also saw the need for a wellness community where people could share ideas and support one another.
The turning point came when I began using these therapies myself. Red light therapy helped reduce inflammation, saunas supported detoxification and circulation, and cold plunges helped manage chronic pain. By tracking my health metrics through wearable technology, I saw measurable improvements in heart rate variability, exercise capacity, recovery, and pain levels. Experiencing those results firsthand inspired me to bring these tools to the Wilmington community.
What makes Di+Thurma Wilmington unique?
Di+Thurma Wilmington brings several science-backed recovery therapies together in one place, making advanced wellness tools accessible and easy to incorporate into everyday life. Our goal is to give people practical ways to improve resilience, energy, and long-term health. I wanted to create a space where people could proactively care for their bodies, recover peacefully, and invest in their future health. It’s about helping people optimize how they live, perform, and age, while building a supportive wellness community.
How does membership work?
Our membership is designed to provide foundational tools for long-term health and performance. Members have access to high-heat and infrared saunas, cold plunges, red light therapy, and compression therapy. Together, these therapies support circulation, reduce inflammation, improve muscle recovery, enhance mitochondrial function, and help regulate the nervous system. We offer an unlimited monthly membership for $149, allowing members to visit as often as they like Monday through Saturday. Our goal is to make wellness accessible—because consistent practice delivers the greatest benefits. In many cases, the membership costs less than visiting a similar studio twice a month.
We’re also continually expanding our offerings with upgrades like a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) mat and facial compression to further support recovery and stress reduction. In addition, we offer longevity consulting and peptide therapies designed to support metabolic health and mitochondrial function. Our metabolic reset programs include nutrition guidance, exercise planning, body composition tracking, and tools such as a vibration plate.
What is contrast therapy, and why is it beneficial?
Contrast therapy alternates between high-heat sauna sessions and cold-water immersion. This practice has long been used in Nordic cultures and by high-performance athletes. Our recommended protocol is 10 minutes in a dry sauna heated to 170–190°F, followed by three to five minutes in a cold plunge at 40–55°F, repeated for three cycles and ending with cold. Over time, this practice helps train the vascular system, improving circulation and reducing inflammation. It also supports muscle recovery, metabolism, mood, and focus through increased neurotransmitter activity. Heat exposure activates heat shock proteins that support cellular stress responses, while regular sauna use has been associated with improved cardiovascular health and reduced mortality risk. Consistency is key—and that’s what our membership model helps make possible.
What can visitors expect on their first visit?
Our goal is for guests to feel comfortable from the moment they arrive. First-time visitors receive a tour and overview so they understand how the therapies work and how to structure their session.
The studio itself is designed to feel calm and restorative, with minimalist Scandinavian-inspired design and soft lighting. Each service takes place in a private suite with a spacious sauna and room for a friend or partner if desired. The environment is intentionally quiet so members can disconnect from daily stress and activate the body’s relaxation response. Many people visit after work or following a workout. A typical session might begin with red light therapy, followed by contrast therapy in a private suite—starting in the sauna and transitioning to the cold plunge to stimulate circulation and sharpen focus. Finishing with compression therapy or the PEMF mat completes the recovery cycle. Members often report leaving feeling both relaxed and energized, with improved mental clarity, reduced muscle soreness, and better sleep. Over time, the goal is for this experience to become a regular ritual that supports resilience, performance, and long-term health.
